Halloween. Good or Bad?

Mike's Super Easy Sunday Message

Boo! Get ready all you goblins, ghouls, witches and vampires – it’s Halloween time once again!  That time of season where we all dress up in our favorite costumes (yes, some distasteful), go around from door-to-door begging for a handout of the sweet, sugary good stuff! Maybe attend a Halloween party dancing to the classic Halloween hits of years gone by! Umm…yeah, but what does Halloween mean to a Christian? “Isn’t it the devil’s holiday?”, asked one person of me last week. Here’s truly what Halloween is:

Halloween is a Celtic-pagan holiday (don’t breathe a sigh of ‘I told you so’ just yet – so is Christmas and Easter – the way most God-people celebrate them!). Also known as Samhain (pron. SOW-in), it is a time of year where the Earth has reaped its last harvest – just before the ground begins to ‘sleep’ (Winter) before it reawakens in the Spring. It is also known as the Wiccan New Year – same principles involved. Really, no devil involved here, however, that’s not to say we won’t see some ‘devils’ this Halloween.

As a Christian, Christ is (or should be) in your spirit and your heart AT ALL TIMES! This INSURES 2 things: 1) Nothing – NOTHING – can EVER hurt your spirit! (Yes, you have one but, that’s another message). And 2) You carry your one and ONLY ticket to live with God in Heaven after your body dies! (Another message for another time).

Ask yourself this question: “Is what I’m doing, right now, taking Christ out of my spirit & heart while ‘dragging’ me to worship something else?” If you answered ‘yes’, then perhaps you should refrain from doing what you’re doing! Halloween is not ‘the devil’s holiday’. It is OK to go Trick-or-Treating, listen to Monster Mash, watch a scary movie – do it! Just, never forget, to keep Christ with you in everything you do, ALWAYS! It’s HOW you ‘treat’ the holiday that defines what that holiday means! Keep Christ ‘worn’ under that costume when you celebrate this Halloween – He’ll keep you away from the ‘tricks’ while filling you with ‘treats’!
